Explaining Pinterest Analytics Terms

Pinterest is a very unique platform that uses similar yet different terms when showing a creator their analytics. Some you might know - and some you might be curious to learn more about. This blog will walk you through them so that your experience when reviewing your analytics is less about asking questions and more about getting answers!

What Are Impressions On Pinterest?

This number is showing you how many times a pin of yours has shown up on a screen. Users don't necessarily have to engage with the pin in order for you to see that it made an impression; they can simply scroll right by it.

Impressions are an important number to track, especially when you compare them with your engagement numbers. If you have really high impressions, but really low engagement - then your analytics are telling you that your pin isn't generating enough interest.

Our advice, if this is the case, is to see what your most popular pin is. Something about that pin made people want to like it, to save it, or to click it to learn more. So when you're creating pins in the future, let the popular pin inspire you.

What Is Engagement On Pinterest?

Your engagement is showing you how many times your pins have been clicked, saved, and liked. Basically, any time someone interacts with your pin, then you will see that interaction reflected in your engagement.

This is an extremely important metric because it is letting you know what people are interested in seeing from you. For example, we see high engagement when we post infographics on Pinterest - but less engagement when our graphic is a simple picture telling people to "read more."

This let us know that people value having graphics that provide them with information instantly, so we switched our Pinterest campaign to offer more infographics (which resulting in our platform growing significantly).

What Is The Total Audience On Pinterest?

Don't mistake your total audience for your followers! While followers elect to see more of your content, your total audience are just the amount of people who have either seen your pins or interacted with them.

While the total audience number by itself doesn't give you much information you can act on, it does provide you with more insight into how your pins are performing. For example, if your impressions number is super high, but your total audience number is super low, then that means that your pins are being pushed to the same group of people.

If you have a niche audience, then this is probably something that you're expecting and okay with.

What Are Engaged Audiences On Pinterest?

This number is telling you how many people engaged with your pins. This is great, since it shows you how many people are interested in your content. If your marketing goal is to increase consideration in your business, then this is a number that you should focus on.

What Are Pin Clicks On Pinterest?

Pin clicks show you how many people clicked on your Pin. This number shouldn't be confused with how many people clicked your pin to go to your website! That is tracked under an entirely different metric.

Someone results in a pin click when they are scrolling through their feed, see your graphic, then click it to read your caption.

What Is An Outbound Click On Pinterest?

An outbound click is when someone clicks the link that you attached to your pin. For example, a lot of our pins bring people to our blog page so that they can learn more about the topic we created a graphic for. When someone clicks our pin to go to our website, Pinterest will track this as an outbound click.

This number is extremely important, and I suggest reviewing which pins are resulting in outbound clicks - because these are the pins that you really want to be inspired by.

What Are Saves On Pinterest?

You might also know Saves under a different name: re-pins. Basically, this is when people repost your pin on their own boards. This is a good thing! You want people to save your pins because it shows that they are interested in what you created, that they like the way your pin was designed, and that they want to share your work with their own audience.
