How To Get More Customer Testimonials

A purple graphic with lightning bolts.

As a business owner, you're probably well aware of how valuable customer testimonials are - especially as a marketing tool.

A testimonial can be used to increase trust and credibility. Seeing positive testimonials from happy customers and clients can help persuade them to make a purchase.

But gaining them isn't always easy. Which is why we're writing this blog! To help you learn various ways to get them - because they are definitely worth the added effort!

1. Make Leaving Testimonials Easy

The easier you make it for customers to leave testimonials, the more likely they will be to do it. If they have to look for a place to leave a review, then most of them will likely give up.

Here's what you should do to avoid that:

  • Have a testimonials page on your website. This can be where you share all your testimonials and have a place where people can have their own. Here is an example.

  • Send out email requests. For every service you complete or product you sell, you can also send an email asking for a review, explaining how meaningful it would be for your business, and telling them that it will help you improve your products/services for future customers or clients.

2. Ask Specific Questions

People are busy and they have their own lives. This is understandable! Which is why this tip is so important.

Someone might want to leave a review but they don't know what to say. Asking specific questions can help guide them in the right direction (and also ensures that you get a review that contains useful and relevant information).

So think about what you want the reviews to reflect. Your customer service? Your products? Your services? Your courses? How your business helped them solve a problem?

So if you're leading your customers/clients toward making a review, make sure you also have a question to ask them!

3. Use Social Media

Social media is a great way to get testimonials! It's actually a part of our social media marketing plan, as well.

Here is what you can do: post a review request on your company's accounts (you can even showcase a review you already have). You can either lead them to your testimonials page, your Facebook review page, or your Google My Business reviews. These are places where your audience will be able to read past reviews and also leave one themselves.

Speaking of Google My Business: make sure you have one. This is a common place people go to check out your business details and to leave testimonials.

4. Offer An Incentive

Like we said before: people have their own lives. Which is why giving them a reason to leave a review is such a great motivator.

So what does this mean? That you should offer an incentive! Tell them that they can receive a discount on their next purchase if they leave a testimonial. Or, if discounts don't align with your business at that time, you can tell them that they will be entered into a contest to win a prize.

5. Make It Personal

And throughout all of the previous tips, make sure to keep it personal. Remember that you're a human talking to another human, so even if you aren't speaking to there person directly, you can still share why testimonials mean so much to you or other related fun facts. Here are some ideas:

  • Include how testimonials have already improved your services/products.

  • Include how you valued the experience you had with the customer/client

  • Include why it's so important for you to improve your services/products based on testimonials

  • Send a handwritten note along with your product asking for a testimonial

  • Give your customer/client a class

All of these ideas show them that you value their opinions and appreciate their feedback.

Need another example? Well, I once left a review for a bunny groomer after she sent me photos of my bunny getting groomed. It meant a lot to me that she took the time to take such amazing pictures of my bunny, and it meant even more that she sent me them via text. I felt like my bunny was in good hands and I wanted to help her business grow, so I left a testimonial hoping that she would see positive changes (which I don't doubt that she had)!
