Quick Do's and Don'ts of Website Design

Quick Do's and Don'ts of Website Design by Jocelyn Figueroa

There are certain do's and don'ts of website design that should be followed in order to create an effective and user friendly website. By keeping these guidelines in mind, you can avoid common mistakes that can frustrate users and hurt your website's visibility.

The Do's In Designing A Good Website

  • Minimize your navigation links: you don't want twenty navigation links or else your user will feel overwhelmed and leave.

  • Make it clear what the purpose of each page is: your about page should be so your users can learn about you while another page's focus will be for users to learn about your products.

  • Make sure your content isn't difficult to understand: if your content is written for an expert then many people will be too confused to want to stay on your website.

  • Make your links and buttons easy to find: they should be bold and highlighted to increase click opportunity.

  • Check to see that all your pages load fast: a fast website will make your users extremely happy.

  • Make sure that everyone on your website works: this means that links should bring people to LIVE pages, that images are loading properly, that videos play when they're clicked... etc.

  • Your website should look good on all devices: this is especially true for mobile devices, since a big chunk of your website traffic will come from them.

  • Only include high-quality images and videos to your website: a blurry or pixelated image won't have a positive impact on your users.

  • Make sure all the images you include are relevant to your content: images are the first thing our eyes are drawn to, so if something feels out of place or confusing then that will be your users' first impression of your webpage.

  • Above everything - provide helpful and informative content: this is the best thing you can do for your users.

The Don'ts In Designing A Good Website

  • Don't go overboard with animations or flashy graphics: too much movement and graphics will slow down your page speed, which is one of the most important aspects of website design.

  • Don't use complex jargon: write for beginners, they will thank you for it!

  • Don't make your website design feel too complicated or cluttered: when your design is simple, your user will instantly know what they need to focus on, which makes the purpose more impactful.

  • Don't provide irrelevant or useless content: always write for your target audience, they are the people who will make a purchase and join your community.
