What Does "Social Media Handle" Mean?

The Quick Explanation

A social media handle is a unique identifier that every social media account has. It is almost always customizable depending on the platform and also almost always begins with an @ symbol.

Here are screenshots of some of our social media handles:

The Uses Of A Social Media Handle

You can use a social media handle to find people in the platform's search engines. For example, if you didn't have a direct link to our instagram page, you would be able to find us by going to the Instagram search bar and typing in @empoweredsocialmediaco.

You can also use social media handles to tag someone in your post or in a comment. By using the handle, the person who owns the handle will be notified that you want them to see the post/comment you tagged them in.

Generally, using a social media handle when referring to an account is good practice, since it will eliminate any confusion your readers might feel. Let me explain: if you tell someone that they should visit Empowered Social Media's page, the person will not know which page you're referring to since so many accounts can be named Empowered Social Media. However, we are the only account with the handle @empoweredsocialmediaco, so the person you're speaking to won't accidentally visit a page that you weren't referencing.

Tips For Creating Social Media Handles

  1. Choose a catchy handle. There shouldn't be a bunch of numbers in it nor should is be full of a bunch of letters that don't make up a word. People will not want to tag you in a post if your handle is too difficult to spell or remember.

  2. Make sure the handle accurately reflects your brand. The best thing you can do is to make your business name your handle. However, if that isn't available, you can have your industry in your handle or your name (but only if you are the face of the company).

  3. Your handles should be consistent across platforms. This will ensure that people will easily find you in different places online. For example: you don't want your handle on Instagram to be @coolconnecticutcafe and your Facebook handle to be @wesellyummycoffee.
